Wildcat WebshopMon, 09/08/2008 - 17:36 — mattBetween 2002 and 2005 I worked full time at Wildcat in Brighton UK as an in-house Graphic Designer and Web Developer. The wildcat shop is online now and fully integrated with their local business software. |
MAD Juggling - Mark Adam DouglassTue, 09/09/2008 - 16:24 — mattMy friend Mark Douglass is an incredibly talented man. He's an excellent juggler, awesome poi spinner, great at adagio, hula hoop, staff.... the list goes on and on. I was delighted when he approached me to make his new website. Mark was great to work with. He followed my instructions, gave me everything I needed and had a very clear idea of what he wanted his site to be like. He sent me a mock up of his logo, the hat and test. I modified the font and rearranged the position of the hat so it would fit nicely into a header. I then sketched out some ideas and presented 3 of them to him. We discussed what he liked and disliked and came up with the final design and layout. I then put all the content roughly into place and the site was at a point where we could go live. Within a month Mark wanted to add more content to the site and make a few changes. We decided it would be best if I spent the time developing a system whereby Mark could update the content himself. To do this I integrated FCKeditor into his site, making an admin section whereby he could edit text and layout, upload images, movies and so on. He absolutely loves his site and the tools I've made for him to edit it with. He keeps it up to date and we are both very happy with how this project turned out. |
Souk Trading - Flash SiteTue, 09/09/2008 - 16:34 — mattSouk Trading is a Moroccan furniture supplier based in Brighton UK. In 2003/4 they decided their site needed some updating. I was called in to turn their html site into a nice little flash showcase site. The project went well and the client was happy with the results. They have recently changed over to a database driven site. I also set up a webshop for them but this never went live since the furniture is all quite big and heavy, which makes delivery very expensive. |
CD CoverTue, 09/09/2008 - 17:05 — mattThe Happy Endings are a band based in Melbourne Australia. Whilst I lived over there I worked on a few projects for the band, here's the CD cover I made for their new album. |
Wildcat Catalogue 2005Tue, 09/09/2008 - 18:49 — mattThis was a huge project that me and Joe Plant did together. The catalogue is 192 pages, full colour A4. Containing over 3000 separate products, each with 5 - 50 different specifications. Joe took care of the graphics whilst I managed the project. I was responsible for grouping the products onto pages. Getting the content written, formatting all the text with In-Design, checking for errors, indexing the products and so on. We both shared the photographic work and endless hours cutting out products in photoshop. |
AdvertsTue, 09/09/2008 - 18:57 — mattWhilst at wildcat I made adverts for tattoo magazines. A4 full colour ads that were printed in serveral magazines distributed worldwide. Here's a random selection. |
PhotographyTue, 09/09/2008 - 18:59 — mattA large part of my job was photographing jewellery and cutting out the backgrounds. Wildcat has thousands of products so it was a very labour intensive job, however I did learn how to use a Nikon D100 digital SLR. |
Ikon PlugsTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:07 — mattIkon Plugs were a new product that I spent a lot of time working on. They are a 6mm - 30mm diameter 'plug' which fits a stretched hole in your ear. The front on the plug has a paper graphic embedded into it with clear resin. I did all the graphics for this product range. |
PicturebellsTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:08 — mattSimilar to Ikon Plugs but with a much smaller image sunk into a navel bananabell as shown in the Red graphic below. Again, I did all the graphics for these and helped develop the product range. Both Ikon Plugs and Picturebells are very profitable ranges for wildcat and the images have been used to develop further products. |
Logo DevelopmentTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:14 — mattThe brief for the logo was very specific. I was given several images of grape vines and asked to make the end half of it look robotic. I made 3d models of vines and leaves using Z-brush and composited everything together with photoshop. The first image below is the logo used on letter heads. All images © Vinetology |
Robot: 3d Composite IllustrationTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:21 — mattThen I asked the client to take some photos of the vineyard to place the robot in. I was quite specific about the camera angles. The trickiest part of this technique is matching the 3d perspective to the camera lens perspective. Once i had matched the perspective I rendered the 3d model and then composited the render with the photograph using photoshop. |
Graphics and BrandingTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:29 — mattI've always had great fun with the 'branding' of spherculism. Here's the current site logo and the 'Sm' graphic, aka 'the Sphercular Om' The 'blue flame' has been a constant theme for all the graphics. It's an inverted photo of a flame, this is used because the site is not a fire spinning site, we all spin fire from time to time but by dropping the ego associated with fire poi we've managed to push the limits way beyond what most fire spinners can do. |
Sphercular Vision DVDTue, 09/09/2008 - 19:37 — mattThe DVD took about a year to produce, for six months it was my only job. The final product is 90 minutes long and contains 20 tracks. The music is mainly by a band called Bad Science from Brighton, UK and the video footage is tightly edited to the audio. This was a very big project and I had to learn many new video skills to complete it. Below are two youtube videos of the DVD trailer and one of the tracks called 'Blink of an I'. The cover and disk graphics took a long time to produce, here they are. |
PoibotTue, 09/09/2008 - 20:00 — mattSoon after making the original spherculism site it became apparent that nobody had ever managed to simulate poi moves in a graphical way. There's many good juggling simulators, there's a cool one for diabolo but not one for poi. So I took it upon myself to make the first one, it's called poibot and I used Flash to build it. After that Poibot became a bit of celebrity and earned its right to become the official mascot. Here's a closer look at the illustration I did for the dvd. I made the 3d model using Z-brush, then painted all the robotic bits in photoshop. The arms at the back are all traced from video footage in the dvd, so it's an amalgamation of all of us using all our different toys. |
Methodist Conference Registration FormThu, 09/25/2008 - 16:53 — mattEach year the Methodist Church of New Zealand hold a huge annual conference. The logistics of organising this event puts a large strain on the admin team each year. Whilst I was living in New Zealand I was called in to help them automate the registration with a web based form. At first it seemed a fairly simple task but as time went on it became a pretty complex little website. There are many simple fields, like name and address. But a lot of the fields need to be updated depending on the answer to the previous question. There's lots of javascript in there to show different questions in different situations. Then we needed a way to take the form data and integrate it with the local database at head office. We decided to take the form data and email it to the church with an xml file attachment containing the data for each registrant. This xml file is then imported into their database, this part of the project was dealt with by my colleague. The system saved them so much time, and worked so well in 2007 that they got us back in to improve the system for 2008. They now have an admin page where they can update text on the form, for example they can alter the dates, location, options in the drop down lists and so on. The look of the site was also updated this year to match the theme of the methodist drupal site. Overall they have been very happy with the system. |
